Jackson State University

About: Jackson State was founded in 1877 as Natchez Seminary with only 20 students. The purpose was to educate newly freed slaves to become ministers and teachers. Today, Jackson State University is now Mississippi’s Urban University boasting a student population of 8, 500. According to US News & World Report, Jackson State ranks in the top twenty among HBCU’s nationally in the Best Colleges of 2009 Edition.

Admission Info: "Students meeting any of the four options below can be granted full admissions: 1. Complete the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) with the minimum 3.2 high school GPA 2. Complete the CPC with: a. a minimum 2.5 GPA or class rank in the top 50% and b. a score of 18 or higher on the ACT or SAT 3. Complete the CPC with: a. a minimum of 2.0 GPA and b. a score of 18 or higher on the ACT or SAT equivalent 4. Satisfy the NCAA standards for student athletes who are Full Qualifiers under Division I Guidelines. Must have 2.5 GPA on the CPC and ACT score of 17 or SAT equivalent."

Scholarship/Financial Aid: "Scholarship and achievement grants are awarded to deserving students based on scholastic merit and financial need. Scholarships and achievement grants are offered as an integral part of the recipient’s total financial aid package. Policies concerning scholarships and achievement grants are determined by the Scholarship Committee. The amount of each award is determined by the scholarship or grant category. These awards shall not exceed the “cost of attendance” at the University. For individual students with scholarships from multiple sources; awards from sources shall be applied to the student’s “Financial Aid Budget” first and the institutional award(s) shall be applied last. This policy shall not supersede any Federal, State, NCAA, or Athletic conference regulations.
