About: Established in 1887, Florida A&M University (known as FAMU) is a four-year, public, co-educational institution of higher learning, fully accredited by SACS. Its mission is to provide an enlightened and enriched academic, intellectual, moral, cultural, ethical, technological and student-centered environment, conducive to the development of highly qualified individuals who are prepared and capable of serving as leaders and contributors in our ever-evolving society. FAMU awards baccalaureate degrees in 63 disciplines, master’s degrees in 36 disciplines, the doctor of philosophy degree in 11 disciplines, and professional degrees in 2 disciplines. Admission Info: Each applicant must submit a $30 non-refundable fee with the admissions application. Fee waivers are accepted from first-time-in-college Florida residents only. A first-time-in-college applicant must submit a high school transcript from a Commission on Higher Education regionally accredited high school, submit official SAT or ACT testing scores, submit two counselor letters of recommendation, and submit a 500 word essay. Students whose first language is not English may be required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). A transfer student who has earned at least 12 semester hours of college credit following graduation from high school must also meet the first-time-in-college regular admission requirements and should have a minimum 2.0 grade point average in all college work and be in good academic standing at the last institution attended. A transfer student who has earned 60 or more semester hours or has earned an Associate in Art degree must submit an official transcript from each college/university attended, have a minimum 2.0 grade point average, and be in good academic standing at the last institution attended.
Scholarship/Financial Aid: Financial aid is awarded according to each student’s need in relation to college costs. Financial aid awards are given in the form of grants, loans, work-study, and scholarships, offered singly or in various combinations. Students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and special talents in high school or at a community college may qualify for the University Presidential Scholars Award.
